ABOUT

Daniel Murgatroyd is a British painter living and working in south-west France. Born in Derby in the United Kingdom, he moved to France in 2002. A largely self-taught artist, he began painting seriously in 2017 before becoming a full-time professional painter in 2021.

Working in oil and acrylic, Murgatroyd’s paintings are characterised by bold colour and thick, expressive brushwork. His work often balances elements of realism and impressionism, with a strong emphasis on colour, light and atmosphere.

Early inspiration came from the distinctive light and architecture of Bordeaux, where he spent many years. While this environment strongly influenced his early work, his paintings now draw from a wider range of locations and experiences.

City streets, harbours and café interiors are recurring subjects in his work. Having previously run a bar, Murgatroyd developed a particular interest in the atmosphere of these social spaces.

Through energetic brushwork and vibrant colour, his paintings aim to capture the movement and emotion of everyday life.

Murgatroyd’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in Paris, The Hague, Montreal, Toulouse and Troyes, and is held in private collections throughout Europe, North America and Asia.
